Desiderata by  Max Ehrmann

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams; it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful.

DESIDERATA

Va' serenamente in mezzo al rumore e alla fretta e ricorda quanta pace ci può essere nel silenzio. Finché è possibile, senza doverti arrendere, conserva
i buoni rapporti con tutti. Di' la tua verità con calma e chiarezza, e ascolta gli altri,
anche il noioso e l'ignorante:
anch'essi hanno una loro storia da raccontare.
Evita le persone prepotenti e aggressive:
esse sono un tormento per lo spirito.  

Se ti paragoni agli altri, puoi diventare vanitoso e aspro,
perché sempre ci saranno persone superiori ed inferiori a te. Rallegrati dei tuoi risultati come dei tuoi progetti. Mantieniti interessato alla tua professione, benché umile:
e' un vero tesoro rispetto alle vicende mutevoli del tempo.

Sii prudente nei tuoi affari, poiché il mondo é pieno di inganno.
Ma questo non ti impedisca di vedere quanto c'é di buono:
molte persone lottano per alti ideali, e dappertutto la vita e' piena di eroismo. Sii te stesso. Specialmente non fingere di amare. E non essere cinico riguardo all'amore, perché a dispetto di ogni aridità e disillusione esso e' perenne come l'erba.Accetta di buon grado l'insegnamento degli anni, abbandonando riconoscente le cose della giovinezza.

Coltiva la forza d'animo per difenderti dall'improvvisa sfortuna.
Ma non angosciarti con fantasie. Molte paure nascono dalla stanchezza e dalla solitudine. Al di la' di ogni salutare disciplina, sii delicato con te stesso.Tu sei un figlio dell'universo, non meno degli alberi e delle stelle; tu hai un preciso diritto ad essere qui.
E che ti sia chiaro o no, senza dubbio l'universo va schiudendosi come dovrebbe.

Perciò sta in pace con Dio, comunque tu Lo concepisca, e qualunque siano i tuoi travagli e le tue aspirazioni, nella rumorosa confusione della vita conserva la tua pace con la tua anima. Nonostante tutta la sua falsità, il duro lavoro e i sogni infranti, questo e' ancora un mondo meraviglioso.                  Sii prudente.

Fa’ di tutto per essere felice.
